Truck Stop Heroes and Free Advice

Just how valuable is free advice?

My Paw Paw used to have a saying, “It doesn’t cost anything to take free advice” I can see where he was coming from with that, accept help from someone who’s willing to help you.

On the contrary, I’ve learned over the years that “free” doesn’t mean valuable. I’ve also come to find out that everyone has random opinions that they like to pass off as “advice”. Some people just like to hear the sound of their own voice, or wanna be able to brag about how they saved someone. Because of this, I have a VERY hard time accepting unsolicited advice.

Let me bring this point home with a quick story:

As some of you may know, I’ve been a truck driver for 5 months now, and as a whole it’s been awesome. However, it seems that every trucker I meet on the road is apparently the best thing on 18 wheel. I’m at a truck stop about to shut down for the night and I have to back my truck into a tight spot. Knowing this would be a challenge, I asked my partner to spot me.

As we’re setting this up, I see this random guy talking to my partner and then random mouth breather comes up to my truck and tries to tell me a “bEtTer wAy” to back the truck in because “No oNe eLSe hAs goTtEn it riGht aLl nIght”.

I wanted to call him everything under the sun and tell him to back up, but being the more mature person, I simply say thanks and proceed with my backing. I would up getting into the spot my first try, and Mouth Breathing Truck Stop Hero is all like , “Oh yOu a rEaaLL dRiVeR, huh” and I smile and say “damn right” and he goes on about his business.

I say all that to say this, there’s nothing inherently wrong with opinions and advice, we just have to check our sources for credibility.

This blogging is kinda fun, stay tuned for the next post.
